Today we slept in and left for Heidelberg about 10. We drove through Manniheim to get there and saw the John Deere tractor factory and most of the business district of the city. Heidelberg was much larger than I expected, even though it was untouched during WWII its castle was left in ruin by the French, rebuilt and then destroyed again by lightning and fire. This castle is in the pictures above from the old town below. The castle has the largest wine barrel that would hold about 50,000 gallons of bad wine.
The old town was very clean and we had a very good Flammkuchen (a German pizza) at a little outdoor restaurant. Then we found a painting by an artist from the Netherlands that we really liked. It was fun to just people watch, lots of kids out eating lunch, even 5-6 year olds on their bikes with their little backpacks. Tomorrow we head across the river to France.
